Chart your course into racing! A free series of events designed to help novice skippers (and their crews) get started racing their boats in Marina del Rey:

IYR 2013

Event #1: Introduction to Yacht Racing

March 23rd, 2013

 

This event is for your crew as they begin racing with you. Introduction to Yacht Racing will have three parts: a morning session ofspeakers and equipment displays, an introduction to various kinds of boats, and a practice race in the afternoon.  Introduction to Yacht Racing will help prepare your crew for upcoming races. New skippers who want to get an easy start to racing are encouraged to sign up their boat for this event (skippers need to have basic tight-quarters boat handling ability to participate). Event #2: Racing 101

March 30, 2013

Racing 101 is a classroom presentation for anyone who has never been in a sailboat race before, it will focus on what racing is like in Santa Monica Bay and will answer such questions as: What types of races are available and where do they go, what does a race course look like, who runs the races, who governs the rules, what are the rules, what is a start line/finish line, what are sailing instructions, just to name a few. Event #3: Starting Seminar

April 6th, 2013

The Start Seminar is for skippers and boat owners who want to hone their skills in this critical part of racing. The morning session will cover important rules and starting tactics, and in the afternoon moves to the water for practical application and instruction with repeated practice starts. Contact Santa Monica Windjammers Yacht Club (SMWYC) for more information.

Event #4: Homeport Regatta

April 16th, 2013 6:30pm and April 21st

For over 40 years, Homeport Regatta has been turning boaters into racers on the waters of Marina del Rey by providing a no-cost introduction to this exciting facet of the sport. This event is tailored to novice skippers, so by race day you should have enough knowledge to go out and give it a try! This is a two-day event: The pre-race seminar on Tuesday April 16th at 6:30pm will go over the rules you need to know, as well as many other helpful insights for your first race.

April 21st is race day; racers will meet at Pacific Mariners Yacht Club at 11:00 AM for pre-race instructions, then head out in their boats to go racing.
